Farr Tops International Field At The Nationals
Phil Michell posted Sunday January 31, 2010.

East Coast Pipelines Racing pilot Robbie Farr emerged victorious at Speedway City in the 35 lap A-Main last night in the 2010 Jack Daniels Racing Australian Sprintcar Nationals. After starting on the front row Farr led throughout the main event and both he and Crew Chief Nick Speed were elated to win one of the biggest single night races on the Australian racing calendar.

“I don’t really enjoy racing for points week in week out so to just go out there and race for the win was a lot of fun. I really must thank for Wendy for putting on this show, to win $10,000 for a one night show is tremendous money. I really must thank all of my guys they gave me a great car tonight and from a drivers point of view the format was a lot of fun” commented Farr on the podium.

The format in which Farr was referring to was the unique “Match Race” dash series which saw the top six drivers square off in four 2 lap dashes to decide the front three rows. At the completion of the dashes Victorian David Murcott, who was back in the Downing Brothers #97 Cool, had the lowest points tally therefore he started on pole with Farr, American Jason Johnson, Steven Lines, Classic Champion Shane Stewart and James McFadden rounding out the top six.

With Farr leading the entire journey the real battle of the race was for second with Murcott and McFadden trading places on several occasions in the closing stages. Eventually Murcott managed to hold off the hard charging youngster with Max Dumesny and Ryan Farrell completing the top five.

Three time South Australian Champion Steven Lines was the first of the local home in sixth while Track Championship leader Jamie Cobby, Brooke Tatnell, Mark Reuter and Danny Reidy completed the top ten. The remaining finishers included Matt Egel, Terry Pitt, Steven Caruso and Brad Keller.

Following the final Cobby was awarded as the Jack Daniels Racing Hard Charger of the Race while Western Australian Darryl Clayden received a new right rear Hoosier tyre courtesy of Phil Lonsdale after finishing seventh in B-main.

Earlier the heat wins were shared between Reuter, Reidy, Keller, Nick Lacey, Murcott, McFadden, Farrell and Dumesny while Egel, Lacey, Keller, Pitt, Luke Dillon, who started from position 17, and Caruso were the six drivers to transfer from the B-Main.

The meeting unfortunately proved to be a real tough one for the five Americans on hand as all five failed to make or finish the feature event. Stewart and Jason Johnson were the only two to progress to the main with Stewart rolling the #2 Eagle on lap 20 while Johnson pulled in on lap 22 after contact with Dumesny cut down his left rear tyre.

The remaining three Internationals had nights that they would rather forget after both Danny Smith and Wayne Johnson were involved in a six car incident in the B-Main while Californian Jonathan Allard didn’t get past the heat races after being involved in two separate heat race accidents.
