Huge Season Announced For Speedway City...
James Baker posted Thursday July 15, 2010.

Adelaide's Speedway City has announced its calendar for the 2010/11 racing season. The schedule features 14 high profile Speedway fixtures. There are also 4 Burn Out Competitions, which at this stage are still to be confirmed.

Promoter Wendy Turner says Speedway City is the home of Sprintcar racing in South Australia with 14 of the 13 nights featuring Open (410ci) Sprintcars while the 360ci Sprintcar class will appear on 11 occasions. "We are a Sprintcar track and that is why the SCCA (Sprintcar Control Council of Australia) awarded us the 2012 Australian Sprintcar Championship. I am pleased to be working with Steven Green again from World Series Sprintcars and looking forward to another huge WSS Boxing Night after last years record crowd of over 10,000 people.

"The City of Playford has allowed us to extend our season so we can run over Easter which is later in April next year. We are very happy to welcome all of our sponsors back on board with a new one signed so it is shaping up to be a very exciting season. Plus we have not forgotten about the other sections with major meetings for Super Sedans and Formula 500s plus many appearances for Wingless Sprints, Lightning Sprints, AMCA Nationals, Street Stocks and family favorites such as the Ramp Jump Race, Monster Fireworks Show and Caravan & Dunny Derby. So there is something for everyone as we aim to provide the best entertainment possible," said Turner.

The action commences on Saturday 30th October with the Opening Night featuring the first round of the Speedway City Track Championship for Open and 360 Sprintcars. The inception of the season long tournament has nurtured local car counts to a healthy average of 22 last season which extended to 43 on Boxing Night.

Expect defending champion Luke Dillon to return in force after winning a brand new J&J Chassis kit and front axle courtesy of Wendy Turner and Monte Motorsports. "We are pretty excited with our new transporter, the direction we are heading with our motors and we have all new cars so we are going to have a real hard shot at it. My younger brother (Lee) will be my crew chief and Dad (Garry) is still involved so it is a family team.

"Last year our goal was to win the Speedway City Track Championship so it is good when you can succeed in what you set out to do. This year we will chase World Series Sprintcars when it is in our neck of the woods, the Classic, Australian Title, maybe the 50k at Parramatta but that is pretty close to the end of Speedweek plus the Masters, Nationals and major events in Adelaide.

"Other states have pretty decent prizes for their local series and now we do and the local racing is good. A few years ago there was no incentive but now our car counts are healthy and that is what we look for. I think my main challenge will come from Jamie Cobby but I am not sure what Darryl Downing will do, he usually has David Murcott in the car but David will be doing WSS this year so we will just have to wait and see," said the Hogs Breath and Action Line Marking supported driver.

Jamie Cobby led the points during the first half of the season before a run of outs dropped him to sixth. Other contenders include Matt Egel, Brad Keller, Daniel Pestka, Steven Caruso, Justin Sloan, Ricky Maiolo and Terry Pitt.

Each Open Sprintcar meeting will count towards the Track Championship so expect local drivers to be out in force this season, especially keen to record an upset victory against the influx of interstate and international teams during the major events. These include the 25th running of the Australian Sprintcars Masters, and 14th under the promotional guidance of Wendy Turner, on November 6. With previous winners such as Brooke Tatnell, Trevor Green, Max Dumesny, Jason Johnson, Robbie Farr and David Murcott there will be a lineup of local and interstate stars itching to add their name to the prestigious honor roll.

Round 3 and 4 of the Speedway City Track Championship headline November 20 and December 4. Following the festive break Speedway City will rock to chorus of World Series Sprintcars and the opening round of Speedweek. The Boxing Day extravaganza always attracts a large field as the contracted WSS stars vie for the extra prize money against a host of Speedweek invaders. This event has become an Adelaide Speedway tradition and is one not to miss.

Following Round 6 of the Track Championship on January 8 World Series Sprintcars is back a week later as the bruising tournament makes its way to Western Australia for the Grand Final swing, so drivers will be fighting hard for championship points.

A busy second half of the season sees the running of the Australian Sprintcar Nationals (February 5), Track Championship Round 9 (February 12) and 10 (February 26), George Tatnell Sprintcar Cup (March 5), Champion of Champions (April 2), the final of the Speedway City Track Championship (April 9) and Easter Thrillerama (April 24) rounding out the packed season ensuring heaps of high-speed adrenalin to whet the appetite of Speedway City fans as well as provide locals with plenty of experience in preparation for the 50th Anniversary Australian Sprintcar Championship next season.

The 360 Sprintcar division looks forward to 11 nights of competition (only sitting out the 2 WSS Rounds and the Sprintcar Nationals) with headline meetings being the Speedway City 360 Sprintcar Cup (January 8), Mayor’s Cup (March 5) and Easter Cup (April 24) as well as their Track Championship.

Defending champion Adam Currie is looking for more of the same this season but with competition from the likes of Shane Hendry, Darryl Guerin, Jamie Hendry, Tregan Gates, Mark Burford, Mark Caruso, Scott Hoskin, Craig Bensch and Tim Bartlett he won't have things all his own way. Currie won a fully stocked Jack Daniel's Racing tool kit courtesy of Wendy Turner and Jack Daniel's Racing and hopes to be on the grid again this year, however that depends on securing crucial sponsorship support. "It was excellent for us to win the Track Championship in what was basically our first full season of racing 360 Sprintcars," stated the former Formula 500 driver.

"We will come back and try to do it again if we can secure some sponsorship. Our transporter was stolen and we damaged the car in a big crash at Bordertown. We have repaired the car and it is being powder coated at the moment so that will become our spare chassis if we can get enough support to build a new car and find some transport," stated Currie.

Meanwhile another initiative that has boosted car counts thanks to John Dawson is the JD Couriers Super Sedan Series, which adds even more interest to the Opening Night. Five rounds are locked in (October 30, November 6, December 4, April 2 and 9) with a break mid season so the top drivers can chase major meetings around Australia. The Super Sedan division is looking forward to another strong year after the successful staging of the Australian Championship last March. They also appear on January 8 and February 12 and conclude the season with the 40-lap Fireball Derby, which recently returned to the Adelaide calendar and was a huge hit. Former Australian Champion Mick Nicola from Victoria has won the last two events. Last season Shane Best completed a hat-trick of wins in the JD Couriers Series, after previously winning in 2007/08 and 2008/09.

The Formula 500 division has two meetings (October 30 and November 20) to settle in before their big one, the Christmas Cup on December 4 with interstate interest already being received. Last year American driver Austin Farley took 0.3 seconds off the 1-lap record at this meeting with a time of 14.22 seconds. The flying Formula 500s return in the middle of the season (February 26) to complete 4 shows. Just to demonstrate how fast these pocket rockets are around the 430 metre clay oval Steve James' 20-lap record set last season on the 20th February was only 25 seconds slower than Darryl Downing’s 2005 Sprintcar track record over the same distance!

Wingless Sprints continue to grow across the country with 6 shows scheduled for Speedway City. They race under SCCA rules and are basically a Sprintcar without the top and front wing with a V6 engine fitted and produce close racing with thrills.

Last year Lightning Sprints merged from New South Wales and Queensland Litre Sprints, Victorian and Tasmanian Mini Sprints and South Australian V6 Sprints to form a truly national class. The New Year welcomes them to Speedway City on January 8, February 26 and April 2.

AMCA Nationals return for 9 meetings and drivers will be aiming to knock the Chadwick brothers of Brett and Brian from the record books, who between them currently own every track record at Speedway City and currently stands at 4 each.

Street Stocks also have 9 meetings with 3 track records broken last season. Experienced track guru Jeff Harris returns so expect more record-breaking track preparation again this season.

As if that wasn't enough the fantastic family entertainment will be rounded out with the hugely popular Ramp Jump Race (December 4 and February 12) and Caravan & Dunny Derby plus Monster Fireworks Show (April 24).

The glittering end of season function at the Adelaide Convention Centre will crown the champions on May 14, 2011. More exciting news will be announced as we draw closer to the Opening Night on Saturday October 30.
