Best Dominates Round Two Of The J D Couriers Super Sedan Series...
John Burton posted Tuesday November 9, 2010.
In another barnstorming night of Super Sedan racing in South Australia, Shane Best won three out of three races at Speedway City, in Round Two of the J D Couriers Series. Winning both his heats from position number one, then repeating the exercise from position number eight on the grid, Best, who was still campaigning his "old car" took advantage of the tacky, multi laned race track and sent the message to all comers, that he is serious about his racing, right off the bat! Heat two saw Best make an outside move through turn's one / two and simply drive himself into third spot. This left the three times series winner nine & one half laps to get past Worthley and Vaughan, and he managed that with laps to spare. Doing his cause no good at all was Penola's Dave Gartner who tangled with Gill Worthley, and it could have been deemed a 'racing incident', but unfortunately for Gartner, the stewards claimed it was his fault, and car S8 was sent to the rear. The feature, which was run as the last event on the programme for the second event in a row, saw Best on pole, with Vaughan alongside, Steve Stewart and Gartner filling the second row. Rows three and four consisted of Gill Worthley and Bill Miller and Graham Stewart and Robbie Marchant. James Agius and Russell Worthley brought up the rear. The 15 lap race was literally a "Best Fest" as the S23 drove a fairly conservative race until the S8 of Gartner came along to spoil the Best show. Taking the lead from Best at around lap 9, Gartner seemed to have it in the bag until it appeared that Gartner was struggling with his car. Slowing, yet still maintaining a good pace, Gartner fought hard to keep Best behind him, but in the typical sportsman like way that the Penola Pilot works, knowing he was 'disabled', he tried to keep Best at bay, yet never impeded the pace of the race, and with his car ailing, Best managed to get past and take the win. Second was Gartner in the now 'distressed' S8, with Bill Miller in for third and Steve Vaughan home in fourth spot. Gartners car was literally 'undriveable' at races end, with the left front wheel hanging off, a loss of power steering and a lack of brakes. Dave told me after the race.." I knew I was in trouble and it was getting so hard to drive all I could think was 'come on Besty get past me and lets get this over with' ," Bill Miller, in typical Bill fashion remarked "I got beaten by a side car.........well it only had three wheels!" At the completion of round two of the J D Couriers Super Sedan Series, the points are : S Best 1131 B Miller 851 S Stewart 785 D Gartner 711 G Worthley 709 S Vaughan 684 J Agius 580 R Worthley 492 R Marchant 457 D Miller 17 K Leyson 13 Bill Miller has moved up into second place behind Best, and with the form that Bill showed Saturday night, he could be a serious challenge to Best as the series progresses. Rookie, Russell Worthley, who moved straight from Junior Sedans last year into the 'big league' is managing to stay out of trouble, run his own pace and learn from the more experienced guys and this is always something to admire. It's so easy to come out of one of the lower horsepower sections with a number of wins under your belt, and believe that you can simply mix it with the big boys, and young Worthley is not getting caught up in any of that and he appears to be giving himself the time to settle in. Join us for round three of the J D Couriers Series on December 4th, 2010 at Speedway City, and see if Bill Miller or Steve Stewart can put a dent in Best's series lead. Given that Best is apparently making his debut in his new car, one would have to think that the others will have a tough job in front of them!
