Egel Becomes Second Local Master
Speedway City posted Tuesday November 9, 2010.
South Australian Matt Egel became only the second local to capture the Australian Sprintcar Masters as he claimed the 25th Anniversary edition of the prestigious race at Speedway City. The 35 lap feature event, which was proudly supported by Oxford Insurance Brokers, was run on a hooked up and extremely demanding race track but Egel revelled in the conditions leading at one point by half a lap over eventual runner-up Trevor Green.
“To win the Masters is a great privilege. A lot of big names have won this race and to add mine to the list is a real honour. Last season we went winless so to get a win early in the season takes the pressure off for the rest of the year” added a delighted winner on the podium.
Throughout the final Egel was clearly the fastest car on the race track and he was rarely challenged, even while in dense lapped traffic. Egel’s only real moment of concern was on lap 24 when he was attempting to lap Jason Loveday in turn two with Egel making slight contact with the slower car with the result being Loveday hitting the wall and rolling over.
Second across the line in the gruelling encounter was pole sitter Trevor Green, who was the last South Australian to win the Masters way back in 1998, with third place going the way of defending Track Champion Luke Dillon. Dillon could have easily finished in the runner-up spot as he actually made a pass on Green only to have the red light come on for the Loveday incident. Fourth in the incident filled final went to an impressive Brad Keller, with Jamie Cobby, James McFadden, David Murcott and Steven Caruso rounding out the top eight.
With persistent rain throughout the night the track remained heavy and extremely fast with Egel setting a new 1 lap track record of 11.744 seconds in the final. Unfortunately the fast track caught out several drivers throughout the night including Luke Bowey, Eddie Lumbar, Glen Sutherland and Phil March, who all came unstuck. The worst of the incidents involved Bowey, who tore down the catch fence in turn three.
Heat winners during the night included McFadden, Dillon, Green, Cobby, Murcott and Terry Pitt while the Series was convincingly won by Green, with the final 2 lap dash being won by Green in a new Track Record of 23.84 seconds.
The next round of the Revolution Racegear Sprintcar Track Championship will be on November 20, 2010.
