Egel Is The New Master...
John Burton posted Thursday November 11, 2010.
Following in the footsteps of Gary Rush, Randy Kinser, Gary Brazier and Brooke Tatnell and in dominating form, Adelaide's "Mumbo" Matt Egel took out the 25th running of the Speedway City Sprintcar Masters last night, Saturday Nov 6th, ahead of Trevor Green and Luke Dillon in front of a crowd that recognised that they had just witnessed a young Master at work!
Going into the dashes, Egel was top points scorer after taking a second place from sixth starting position in his first race, then claiming the another second from second on the grid for his second heat.
It looked as though it was going to be either Greens or Egels night, with these two 'hanging around' each other in both races and when the dashes came around, Green won three out of the four, with Egel finishing second three times, and a third in the last one.
The feature race of 20 cars saw Green on the pole, and after deciding to go out of the outside of the grid, at the first start it was Green that got the jump.
A red light situation occurred almost immediately with cars tangling in turn's one/two, and once the field was reset for the start, Egel was determined to not let Green get the jump again.
At the restart Egel ascerted his claim to the inside of the front row and blasted away into turn one, leaving Green and the 'freight train' of James McFadden, Luke Dillon, David Murcott and Terry Pitt in his wake.
Displaying Masterful overtaking skills, Egel carved his way through the lapped traffic, which he caught very quickly, and made a gap for himself back to Trevor Green who appeared to be having problems with getting past these lapped cars.
At the chequered flag is was a jubilent Matt Egel, Trevor Green then Luke Dillon, and the crowd were amazed to hear from track announcer John Cobby that Egel had smashed the one lap record down to 11.744 secs which is an average speed of 131.8 klm per hour!
Needless to say, new team sponsors T&S Refrigeration and Electrical guru, Chris Lee, was absolutley delighted with the "Egel Express" and simply stated "This is what we got involved for....to see young Matt up there, and winning and event like this, is fabulous".
Following a couple of up and down events, it was 'back to square one' for the team this week, and Matt and his father Kevin spent a lot of time re-thinking their set up strategies, and after seeing such a dominant display in both car control and sheer outright speed, one has to say that this time they "nailed it".
The 35 lap journey was fraught with danger as Egel manouvered the S29 through 'back markers' having their own battles and after lapping the S7 car of Jason Loveday for the third time, Loveday made contact with Egel, then turned himself up into the wall down the back straight.
Not letting this upset his momentum, Egel continued on his way at that re-start.
On the podium, Trevor Green, congratulated him on his drive and referred to Egel as 'one very hard charger'.
Standing aloft the top wing of S29, Egel held the chequered flag high and with one finger in the air, declared he was the new "Master" of Speedway City.
Congratulations to Matt on a brilliant win, also to the hard working T&S Team, Quick Time Chassis, Protec Paint and of course "Mr Horsepower" himself, Peter Michaels from PM Race Engines, Hoolagators All American Diecast and Advanced Laser Signs.

Matt Egel with his very happy Crew!
