Dillon And Jones Have The “x Factor”
Phil Michell posted Sunday March 2, 2008.

Flagstaff Hill resident Luke Dillon and Murray Bridge speedster Ryan Jones are latest drivers to visit victory lane in the Jack Daniel’s Racing Speedway City Sprintcar Track Championship as they drove their XXX Chassis’ to convincing wins in the Willaston Hotel Speedway City Cups last night. After starting from the outside of the front row Dillon was never headed in the 25 lap 410ci Sprintcar feature but it was Jones who was the star of the evening as he reset the 20 lap 360ci Track Record by a staggering 12 seconds and in the process actually went quicker than the existing 20 lap record for the open class.

A total of 13 open cars fronted for the Willaston Hotel Speedway City Cup and despite the low numbers the racing was quite entertaining. The night got off to a poor start for Justin Sloan who rolled his #25 Eagle on the start of the opening heat. Sloan would later return for the second round of heats but the altercation sidelined Ian Binding for the remainder of the night. Other than the opening heat accident the heats ran relatively smoothly with Ricky Maiolo, Bordertown’s Dylan Jenkin, Dillon and Mark Reuter each claiming a heat victory.

Therefore Maiolo and Dillon squared off on the front row ahead of Jenkin, Reuter, Jamie Stark, Ben Hall, Jason Loveday and Sloan. On the start Maiolo got the jump into turn one but by the time the leaders exited turn two Dillon had taken the lead and proceeded to run away with the feature event.

Unfortunately for Maiolo his run ended on lap four with mechanical dramas elevating Reuter and Jenkin into the final two podium positions. The order remained this way for the rest of the event with the only other caution being for Scott Hoskin on lap nine, who rolled his #49 Tiner for the second time in two events. Fourth in the feature event went to an impressive Josh Ruhs, who started from position nine, with Loveday, Stark, Sloan and Hall rounding out the finishers.

In the 360ci class it was a similar story as the open class as the feature was totally dominated by Ryan Jones although he didn’t lead every lap. Darryl Wright was the early race leader but Jones slid by in turn four after Wright got hung up behind the lapped car of Shane Hendry. From that point there was no stopping the State Champion as he lapped every car up to fourth on his way to a new track record (4:28.13 compared to 4:40.62).

More than a half a lap behind was pole sitter Darryl Wright, with Clinton Oliver and Michael Burford the only cars not to be lapped. Fifth place went the way of Craig Vanderstelt in the Jeff Eeles owned #31 Cool, with Steven Caruso, Jamie Hendry, Darren Baker, Shane Hendry and Alan Gates completing the top ten.

Earlier the heat victories went to Wright, Oliver and Vanderstelt.

In the Knuckles Logistics / Technical Urethanes Speedway City Formula 500 Cup rookie Darren Shields defeated Ross Miller and Victorian Leigh Van Vinneken. David Hartman emerged victorious in the Protec Paints AMCA National feature event while Holden pilot Robert Atkins was once again the class of the field in the SA Pergola Specialists Street Stock Track Championship.

The next event at Speedway City will be a massive double header on March 15 with the rerun of the 2007/08 Australian Sprintcar Masters and the 30 lap JD Couriers Fireball Derby for Super Sedans.
